Let me tell you about my adventure in Bitter Lake, one of the most intense and visually stunning areas in Black Myth: Wukong. This place is a real gauntlet, packed with four major bosses, hidden paths, and treasures that will test your skills and resolve. I remember sliding down that initial slope, the cold wind whipping past, only to be thrown straight into a brutal fight.
The First Trial: Kang-Jin Star
As soon as the slide ends, a cutscene kicks in, and there she is—Kang-Jin Star. No warm-up, just pure, unadulterated combat. This boss is no joke. She starts in a human form, but don't get comfortable. Her true power lies in her ability to shapeshift into a nearly transparent white dragon that commands devastating lightning attacks. The arena becomes a dance of dodging her human-form combos and then desperately avoiding the wide, crackling sweeps of her dragon phase.

My first attempt... well, let's just say I ended up near the Turtle Island Shrine faster than I'd like to admit. If you fall to her, you'll spawn there too. Just follow the golden trail from that spawn point, and you'll find the shrine itself. But when I finally beat her—oh, the victory was sweet! The rewards were worth the struggle: x3 Cold Iron Leaves, a Loong Pearl, and a Mind Core. Right after the fight, my old pal Zhu Bajie dropped down and wandered over to the edge of the island. That was my cue to move on.
Looting Turtle Island
From the Turtle Island Shrine, I turned left and dropped down. There, on a simple table, sat a golden pot. Opening it granted me a Celestial Jade Lotus Pill—a fantastic find for any tough fight ahead.
Exploration is key here. I headed left from the pot and found a slope leading down. At the cliff's edge, near a lonely brazier, was a wooden chest waiting to be claimed.
I backtracked to the golden pot and took the uphill path, turning right and then left. This area is crawling with Frozen Corpses and Golden Lotus Guais, so stay sharp! Hugging the left cliff wall, I found another left turn leading to a tree bearing a precious Tree Pearl.
The path forward held a green wisp for a quick Will boost, but also a pair of Cyan Bats hanging menacingly from the branches above. They're easy to miss if you're not looking up!
I circled back to the main area near the giant sea turtle's head. Going left and dropping down revealed another wooden chest tucked away. Don't forget to scour near giant rocks for more Tree Pearls!
The Second Challenge: Cyan Loong
Fully stocked, I returned to the shrine and went right. A mysterious figure stood near the cliff. Approaching triggered the next boss battle: Cyan Loong. This dragon, wielding a massive sword, floats ominously around the arena. His attacks are powerful but often have a telltale pause, giving you a split second to react. His moveset includes sword slashes, basic swipes, and electric area-of-effect attacks, all of which become more ferocious in his second phase.
Defeating him was a marathon of patience and precision. The reward, however, was phenomenal. A gold chest appeared in a small pool ahead, containing the Mountain-Shaking Claw. I also earned the Breath of Fire, another Loong Pearl, and Fine Gold Thread.
Journey to the North Shore
With Cyan Loong vanquished, I went back to Zhu Bajie at the turtle's head. This made the great turtle dock at the north shore of Bitter Lake. Dropping down and following the golden trail led me straight to the North Shore of the Bitter Lake Shrine.
From this new shrine, I followed the coastal path to the right. It's a somber walk, lined with many Frozen Corpses. At the path's end, another cutscene played, introducing the third boss: the Apramana Bat.
⚠️ CRITICAL NOTE: Pay attention here! From my experience and what I've learned, the Apramana Bat will not spawn if you defeat the final boss of Chapter 3 before coming here. Make sure you tackle this area in sequence!
The Bizarre Apramana Bat
This boss is a nightmare fusion: a bat's body with the head of a golden demon statue. It's aggressive from the first second, flying erratically and stomping down from the air. Its opening salvo is usually three aerial stomps. It also loves to get in close for vicious wing swipes. The key is watching its shadow and learning its dive patterns.
Once defeated, it doesn't die but flies away, fleeing the area. A strange encounter, to be sure. After the fight, I interacted with the giant skeletal snake head on the left. In a poignant cutscene, the sea turtle shed a single tear. Retracing my steps along the coast to the turtle's head, I found a green glow on the ground below it—the Turtle Tear. Don't miss this key item!
The Final Confrontation: Chen Loong
Back at the North Shore shrine, I turned around and ran along the coast past the hut. Going left, I saw Chen Loong standing resolute in the ocean. Getting close enough triggers the final mandatory boss fight of the area.
Chen Loong is a formidable duelist, a true test of everything you've learned. After a hard-fought victory, he cryptically mentioned that only one of "Xu Dog's resurrection pills" could save him now. This dialogue is your hint toward a secret area and a secret boss! To unlock this, you need to progress his questline, which ties into the Zodiac Village.
Moving Onward: To the Valley of Ecstasy
With the lake's champions defeated, I returned to the North Shore shrine. The path forward leads past more frozen corpses and up into a cave. Ascending the stairs to a wooden platform, I found a bridge with another green wisp for Will. Following the golden trail from there led me to the Precept Corridor Shrine.
This area is a puzzle in itself. From the shrine:
-
Go forward, deal with two Frozen Corpses and a Wolf Guardian, and loot a golden pot.
-
Turn around, take the left path, and go up the stairs.
-
Here, a Red-Haired Yaksha engulfed in blue flames blocks the way. Defeating it rewards you with the Red-Haired Yaksha (Spirit).
-
Past this enemy is a gazebo where a Buddhist child awaits. He speaks the riddle: "To see a Buddha, one must hold the Buddha in one's heart."
To solve this, you must find and interact with four Buddha statues scattered around:
| Statue Number | Location Clue | Hazards |
|---|---|---|
| First | Behind the Buddhist child, on the side of the plaza. | None. |
| Second | Left of the child, down the stairs. | Two enemies guard it. |
| Third | Behind the second statue, through a passageway. | One enemy patrols here. You can fight or run. |
| Fourth | From the third statue, down a narrow left corridor. | Several enemies in the corridor. At the very end. |
After interacting with all four, speak to the Buddhist child again. A cutscene will play. Then, head up the steps where the child was and follow the path. It leads to an outdoor structure built into a crevice. Pushing forward through this area finally brings you to the Mindfulness Cliff Shrine.
Offer your incense here, fellow traveler. You have conquered the trials of Bitter Lake. Your next destination awaits: the mysterious and alluring Valley of Ecstasy. My journey through this frozen, boss-infested landscape was unforgettable—a perfect blend of exploration, tough-as-nails combat, and hidden secrets. Good luck, and may your focus be as sharp as your staff!
